Michigan Future Misses the Mark

By Lyman StoneThe report does not address key structural differences between Michigan and Minnesota’s economies, and it actually misses the fact that Michigan’s “knowledge-based economy” is, by many metrics, just as strong as Minnesota’s. In-state renewable energy mandate eliminated in the Buckeye State; still exists in Michigan

By Jack Spencer | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

Wind plants in Ohio, unlike in Michigan, will now have to try to compete with cheaper wind generated electricity from states where wind power is produced more efficiently. In addition, legislation signed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich freezes the state’s overall renewable energy mandate for two years, while lawmakers re-evaluate it. Michigan still has an in-state wind mandate. … more

No Apologies

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen is sworn in on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, June 20, 2014, prior to testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee hearing on whether tea party groups were improperly targeted for increased scrutiny by the IRS. The IRS asserts it can't produce emails from seven officials connected to the tea party investigation because of computer crashes, including the emails from Lois Lerner, the former IRS official at the center of the investigation who has invoked her Fifth Amendment right at least nine times to avoid answering lawmakers' questions. Court Upholds Law Banning Automatic Wage Increases For Public Employees

Prior to law, unions could lock in compensation increases with little incentive to negotiate

By Jarrett Skorup | Courtesy of Cap Con

A 2011 law banned the practice of salary increases after collective bargaining agreements expired. Before the law, what was happening was a union contract would lock in raises. After a contract expired, the law required districts make pay increases as if the contract was still in effect. That meant step increases and wages were guaranteed until a new contract was agreed to by both parties. The new law froze salaries until a new contract was reached. … more
