Asset Forfeiture Issue Arises With Clause in Human Trafficking Bills

Citizens could lose property under ‘willful blindness’ provision

By Jack Spencer | Coourtesy of Mich Cap Con

Legislation aimed at cracking down on human trafficking could result in government taking more property from citizens in Michigan. At issue is a “willful blindness” clause inserted into House Bills 5230 and 5233 that would allow government officials to take property from people who, while not involved with a crime, benefit by getting property as a result of some form of criminal activity. The ACLU is opposed to the legislation. … more

Happy Anniversary Proposal A

By Michael D. LaFaive and Jack McHugh | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

Twenty years ago, on March 15, 1994, Michigan voters approved “Proposal A,” a fundamental overhaul of Michigan’s tax and school finance system. The product of intense legislating in the second half of 1993, the measure was driven by a public demand to “cut-and-cap” local property tax burdens. A related goal was gradually reducing the disparities in school funding across districts. … more

There Is No Relationship Between College Graduates and Economic Growth

By James M. Hohman |Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

It often is argued that the key to grow a state’s economy is to increase the population of college graduates.
