Tax Cuts and Road Funding

Governor Snyder talks about his plans for tax reduction and fixing roads Click Here for Story

Narrative Changing On Michigan K-12 Education Spending

By Tom Gantert | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

“There is wider appreciation for the fact that Snyder did increase school budgets, just not as much as the public schools wanted,” said James Hohman, of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. “When school officials complain about money not being spent ‘in the classroom,’ what they seem to mean is that the state isn’t contributing money directly to their general fund without strings attached.” … more

State Loses 200,000 Jobs, MEDC Finds 2,185

Why tax cuts are better than corporate welfare

By James M. Hohman and Jack McHugh |Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

Just to stay even, more than 200,000 private-sector jobs need to be created here every three months. Yet even with millions of taxpayer dollars to hand out to lucky “winner” firms, Michigan’s economic development officials could barely discover 1 percent of that figure. … more

There Is No Good Reason the MEDC Should Exist

A history of ‘economic development’ programs in Michigan

By Michael D. LaFaive | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

The reality of government “economic development” programs is that they are in fact political development programs — gaudy PR exercises mainly intended to let politicians boast about a steady flow of shimmery but ultimately meaningless job promises. Seen through this lens, MEDC operations make far more sense. The agency is essentially a publicity machine for politicians. … more

Commentary: Higher Ed Spending Myths

Higher spending does not equal more college graduates and more graduates does not equal a better economy

By Jarrett Skorup |Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

Commentary: Harming the Competition

Why some companies want a higher minimum wage

By Jarrett Skorup |Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

An increase in the minimum wage up to $10.10 an hour (as the president has called for) or $15 an hour (as some union driven fast food protests want) would drive up costs for competitors, which is why some large retailers and high-end restaurants are promoting an increase. … more

‘Business Improvement Zones’ = Property Taxes

If you doubt that, try not paying the “assessment”

By Jack McHugh | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

Michigan residents are increasingly plagued with a raft of such local borrow, tax and spend “zones” and “authorities.” Some are obscure and others well known, like downtown development authorities. Importantly, there is nothing these “zones,” “districts” or “authorities” can do that a local city council cannot do by itself without them. That means these entities exist for just one purpose: To allow local politicians to tax-and-spend more in a manner that avoids democratic accountability and transparency. … more

Pension Costs Mean Tighter Budgets For Classrooms, Taxpayers

MPSERS has unfunded liability of $24.3 billion

By Tom Gantert | Courtesy of Mich Cap Con

The teacher pension system has become an issue in the ongoing debate over state funding. Many school administrators, union officials and politicians don’t want to recognize it as part of their state funding because it isn’t part of the per-pupil foundation allowance that schools get to pay day-to-day operations. The skyrocketing cost for the pension system shows how K-12 spending is increasing while also tightening the budget for other classroom costs. … more

Michigan 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg’s Thoughts on Farm Bill

Today, after years of negotiation, the House passed a Farm Bill conference agreement on a vote of 251-166. In addition to saving $23 billion in taxpayer dollars, the bill achieves significant farm policy reforms, eliminates or consolidates over 100 programs, and establishes commonsense changes to our nutrition programs that root out waste yet preserve a strong safety net for vulnerable families. I voted in favor of the agreement and now look forward to the Senate acting on it to give Michigan farmers certainty as they continue to provide a safe and abundant food supply for our community and the world.
