 Breaking Away from the MEA

By Anne Schieber | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

In 2012, teachers in Roscommon Public Schools took a bold step. They decertified from the Michigan Education Association and formed their own independent union. According to the president of the new union, Jim Perialas, teachers are saving $400 a year in dues and getting better representation for the money. Breaking away from the MEA took time and effort. Below, Perialas offers tips for teachers considering similar action. … more

Commentary: Subsidies Drive Up College Costs

By Jarrett Skorup | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

Higher education spending, especially as direct appropriations, is not much more than a subsidy from the poor to the rich. They encourage students to take out loans they cannot afford and devote time to gain knowledge which may or may not have any value in the job market. For that and many other reasons, the state should limit the subsidies. … more

Trust not in Obamacare Medicaid Promises

By Jack McHugh | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

Gov. Rick Snyder was relying on that Washington politician’s promise when he recommended that Michigan go along with the optional expansion. (It’s worth noting that Medicaid is the primary driver of government health care spending in Michigan that has already grown some 50 percent over the past decade.) Legislators here and in more than half the other states are currently wrestling with whether to go along with the expansion. … more

State Government Has Poor Record Predicting Jobs

By Tom Gantert | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

“Job providers don’t ask for state approval to add jobs, nor do they report to state bureaucrats about why they change their staffing levels,” said James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy analyst for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. “But state policy influences those decisions regardless. Great Myths About Great Start

By Michael Van Beek | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

Spending more money on state-run preschool through Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program is widely regarded as a wise “investment.” Advocates range from Gov. Unfortunately, preschool’s payoff isn’t nearly as predestined as proponents make it out to be, and a close review of the evidence suggests Great Start’s value to taxpayers is dubious. … more

Remembering Margaret Thatcher

By Lawrence W. Reed | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

Margaret Thatcher didn’t end socialism in Britain, but she did more toward that laudable goal that anyone expected and perhaps more than any man at the time could have done. She also gave socialism the tongue-lashing it richly deserved, noting on one occasion that “Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them.” Another time she declared, “Socialists cry ‘Power to the people’ and raise the clenched fist as they say it. We all know what they really mean—power over people, power to the State.” … more

 The Preschool Paradox

By Michael Van Beek |Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

The Center for Michigan recently made the claim that retaining 5-year-olds for another year of kindergarten doesn’t work. The evidence they provide for this is weak, but that aside, this appears to run counter to their other argument that an additional year of state-funded preschool for 4-year-olds yields huge benefits. In both cases, students enter first grade with two years of formal schooling, so why does one “work” and not the other? … more

Marriage and Liberty

Travis Flores, Columnist

If you asked any politician why America is the greatest country in the world, their response would most likely be our freedoms. So why then are we still denying equality to gays? In my personal experience, I”ve never once heard a logical argument why gays should not be allowed to marry. The responses seem to have much more to do with peoples own discomfort over other peoples actions, or a verse from the old testament.

I’d like to reference the political philosopher John Stuart Mill, in his book On Liberty. “The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.”

To expand upon the thought a little bit, the only reason liberties should be denied, is when it does harm to others. We also need to add, that feeling uncomfortable, is not a sufficient justification for discrimination, and yes it is discrimination. When you look down upon another person and say you don’t deserve all the freedoms I have, you are labeling them as a second class citizen.

To those who choose to fight against marriage equality, time is not on your side, young people overwhelmingly support gay marriage, and we will continue to fight for the rights of our fellow Americans. It really is in the best interest of churches to give up this fight, when Millennials  are asked why they’ve left their church, nearly 70% reference at least in part because of religious attitudes towards gays. In this fight over principles we’re merely trying to help you end up on the right side of history.

I’d like to end this on a lighter note so I’ll leave you with Stephen Colbert’s comment to actor Neil Patrick Harris. “But you are also the biggest threat of all… you are a gay person I like. Your threat is that you make being gay seem non threatening. Its almost as if your happiness doesn’t take away from mine.”
