College Subsidies Redistribute from Poor to Rich

By Jarrett Skorup | Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

One of the main misunderstandings by those who want the state to subsidize college degrees is the assumption that this will directly lead to more wealth. But this is an example of “the cart pulling the horse” — that is, people who graduate from college are already capable of great wealth before they actually get a degree. … more

Road Salt Use Should Be Part Of Infrastructure Discussion

By Mark Cornwell | 2/21/2013

Talent Mercantilists Running Amok In Michigan

Growing the state’s economy is more than just having more degrees

By James M. Hohman | 2/21/2013

Livingston County educators receive free CPL training

RetakeOurGov announces it will be giving away firearms training for two Livingston County educators. The training will be provided by an NRA Certified Instructor. When the training is completed, each educator will be able to obtain a Concealed Pistol License (CPL).The leadership of RetakeOurGov was moved to action by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. “We wanted to be proactive,” said Mark Wilsey, Policy Analyst for RetakeOurGov. Mr. Wilsey was referring to legislation recently introduced by State Representative Bill Rogers. House Bill 4098, co-sponsored by Rogers, would give local school boards the authority to allow school employees, including teachers, to carry concealed pistols at school. The bill empowers local school boards to set policies, including training requirements, before an employee could qualify to carry a concealed pistol at school. If enacted into law, it is virtually certain that local school boards would require employees to have additional training, above and beyond that required to acquire a CPL in Michigan. “Providing CPL training to local educators who are interested is a good first step,” said Wes Nakagiri, Treasurer for RetakeOurGov.Concealed Pistol Licenses will be given to two Livingston County educators meeting the following criteria.
  • Must live in Livingston County.
  • Must teach at one of the school districts in Livingston County. The district can reside wholly or partly within the county.
  • Must complete online entry form by 12:00 noon, Monday, March 11, 2013. Form is available at https://www.RetakeOurGov.com.
Winners will be notified via email no later than the week of March 18, 2013.Formed in 2009, RetakeOurGov is an all-volunteer organization based in Michigan, with a primary focus of promoting constitutional governmental policies. RetakeOurGov operates two political action committees.

More Money Is Never Enough

By Jarrett Skorup Courtesy of Michigan Capitol Confidential

In the past two years, districts, schools and education unions have claimed false spending cuts, embellished the amount of money they would lose, forced elementary students to write letters to the governor complaining about funding, compared schools in a fiscal emergency to “being in the slave days,” falsely claimed that they were hurting so much for money that schools couldn’t afford desks and students were forced to sit on the floor, claimed 40 and 60-student classrooms that never happened, and made plans for an illegal teacher strike. … more
